In 2018, the University of Florida’s Office of Sustainability took reuse to the next level with a custom Fill it Forward program.
Sustainable UF launched their Fill it Forward program by getting students to request a custom Fill it Forward tag through their social media channels or website. Sustainable UF would also hand them out at various sustainability events. Sustainable UF’s selective approach to handing out tags has been successful because:
– The students that have received a Fill it Forward tag were genuinely interested in the program.
– Before the tags were given to the students the program was explained to them so they understood what to do with their tag.
The other interesting takeaway from Sustainable UF’s launch approach is that by forcing students to request a tag they have created a level of exclusivity around the program which has encouraged more students to get involved.
Sustainable UF also offers rewards to their students involved in the program. Each time a student scans their Fill it Forward tag they earn 10 points. Once they earn 250 points they earn an entry into the monthly draw. Various departments on campus sponsor the monthly prize which changes out every month.
With their simple and engaging Fill it Forward program the University of Florida and the Office of Sustainability have built a successful Fill it Forward program that is helping students build long-term sustainable habits.
