Case Study

Hamilton College

Sustainability has long been a cornerstone of Hamilton College’s values, guided by their Sustainability Action Plan. Intending to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030, Hamilton focuses on creating a culture of sustainability, managing food and waste responsibly, and making purchasing and procurement more sustainable.

However, two areas in their dining operations presented clear opportunities for improvement:

  1. The Reusable Container Dilemma: While reusable containers had been introduced to reduce waste, the existing token and deposit system proved inefficient. Containers were often misplaced or unreturned, leading to logistical headaches and lost resources.
  2. Single-Use Coffee Cup Waste: Single-use coffee cups remained a significant source of waste, conflicting with the college’s sustainability goals and their aim to foster a greener campus culture.

These challenges underscored the need for a streamlined solution to reduce waste, simplify operations, and engage students in sustainable practices.

Introducing Fill it Forward

Hamilton College partnered with Fill it Forward to implement Borrow in Fall 2024, a reusable container and cup rental system aligned with their sustainability goals. This innovative program allowed students to:

Eliminate Waste: Students had access to free, reusable options for dining and beverages, helping the college move away from single-use products.

Simple Opt-In: Using their Hamilton username and password, students could seamlessly join the program.

Track Usage: Each reusable container and cup was equipped with a Fill it Forward Sticker, which, when accompanied by the Fill it Forward app, encourages accountability and fosters a sense of ownership.

Re-launching Hamilton’s Green-to-Go program with the Fill it Forward app provided the data and accountability we needed. The Fill it Forward team has been fantastic to work with, fully sharing our commitment to success. Beyond managing our borrow program, Fill it Forward has supported our expansion with the recent addition of bottle stickers. We love that both reuse programs can operate on one platform, amplifying our giving impact.

Hamilton College implemented the Fill it Forward program in September 2024, and it has already delivered remarkable results:

170 Rentals Per Day: An average of 170 containers and cups were reused daily, reflecting high engagement and program adoption.

98.5% Return Rate: The digital tracking system minimized losses, streamlining the program.

$7,000+ Cost Savings: Weekly savings of $500 on single-use packaging. The program’s investment will be recouped in under six months, with ongoing daily savings of $70.

Operational Efficiency: The Fill it Forward program was integrated into Hamilton’s dining operations with minimal disruption.

Sustainability Impact

In alignment with the Sustainability Action Plan, the program has delivered significant environmental benefits in just three months. Hundreds of reusable containers and cups have replaced single-use items, keeping substantial waste out of landfills. The program has also fostered a campus-wide culture of sustainability, engaging students and staff in meaningful environmental practices.

Hamilton College’s partnership with Fill it Forward exemplifies how institutions can translate sustainability goals into impactful, operational solutions. By adopting the Fill it Forward Borrow Program, the college has reduced waste, streamlined dining operations, and engaged students in sustainable practices—all while realizing significant cost savings. Their success demonstrates the power of combining innovation with a commitment to sustainability.
