Did you know?
– Globally, 1.8 billion people drink from a contaminated water source
– 1 in 10 people live without basic access to clean water
– 1 in 4 people do not have access to decent toilets or sanitation facilities.
This World Water Day, we ask that you take a moment to reflect on the impact clean water and sanitation can have on a community
World Water Day is celebrated every year on March 22 since 1993. Established by the United Nations (UN) as an international day to highlight the importance of safe water and to bring awareness to the world’s water crisis. This year, the UN’s theme is water and climate change – and how the two are inextricably linked, aligning with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 6, to “ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all” by the year 2030.
At Fill it Forward, we believe choosing to reuse is a simple act of generosity that shows love for our planet and the people on it. We create sustainable products, interactive technologies and global giving initiatives that inspire the world to reuse. Every time you refill your reusable water bottle and scan the Fill it Forward sticker with our app, you are contributing to clean water projects around the world.
This World Water Day, we are excited to feature our new clean water project that is focused on bringing clean water to the people of Bahir, India in partnership with WaterAid. Bihar is the third most populous state in India. While rich in water reserves, access to safe drinking water is a challenge. Geography and climate are partially to blame, including annual flooding and drought conditions in various areas of the state. Also due to high water contamination rates the people of Bihar are frequently exposed to diseases like typhoid, jaundice, and cholera.
From March 16 – 23 2020, every scan within the Fill it Forward app will have 2x the value, to help improve access to clean water, decent toilets, and good hygiene in the most vulnerable districts of Gaya and Madhubani.
To date, Fill it Forward has funded 220+ charitable water projects around the world. We partner with charities that are tackling the water crisis by building sustainable and lasting solutions in the communities that need it most. To learn more about our giving initiatives click here.
