Coastal Carolina University: 1,800+ Students and Staff Power a Campuswide Hydration and Reuse Movement

When Coastal Carolina University launched the Teal Hydro Hustle campaign during Teal Nation Welcome, it quickly became more than a hydration challenge—it became a campuswide movement connecting students, faculty, and staff around wellness, sustainability, and community spirit. Designed to promote healthy habits while reducing environmental impact, the initiative exemplifies how intentional planning and student engagement can spark meaningful change.

Phase 1: Building Anticipation with Orientation Leaders

In the months leading up to the launch, the Office of Orientation, Transition, & Family Programs worked to build excitement across campus. Orientation Leaders served as pilot participants, testing the competitive elements of the Teal Hydro Hustle and sharing insights on what would resonate with incoming students. Their energy and enthusiasm laid the foundation for a challenge that felt personal and fun.

Phase 2: Launching at Teal Nation Welcome

The program came alive during New Student Convocation at Teal Nation Welcome, when the Teal Hydro Hustle was introduced to new students. The freshmen eagerly tracked their hydration and joined the friendly competition. Faculty and staff were invited as well, broadening participation and creating a sense of shared purpose. This approach framed the Hustle as a communal experience and set a tone of campuswide unity that lasted throughout the semester.

Phase 3: Measuring Impact and Reuse Results

The first week alone saw 1,374 students, 358 staff, and 85 faculty take part. Together, the community tracked:

These numbers reflect not only environmental impact but also the power of collective action across Coastal Carolina University.

Phase 4: Sustaining Momentum Across the Semester

Maintaining engagement was a priority. Timely reminders tied to campus events, seasonal milestones, and wellness moments—from hydration check-ins during football season to nudges before holiday breaks—kept the community involved.

Updates, leaderboards, and social recognition encouraged ongoing participation. This consistency transformed the Teal Hydro Hustle from a one-time challenge into a shared culture of wellness and sustainability.

A Symbol of Campus Unity and Sustainability

The success of the Teal Hydro Hustle goes beyond numbers. It created opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to connect, celebrate achievements, and take pride in contributing to a healthier, more sustainable campus.

“What began as a hydration challenge evolved into a symbol of collective wellbeing, sustainability, and campus pride. It showed what can happen when intentional planning, cross-campus collaboration, and student-centered innovation come together—and it has set the tone for future initiatives that build on the strength, spirit, and unity of our community.”
